The Type A-2flight leather jacket is a military flight jacket, which was closely associated with the Second World War. Army Air Forces pilots, bombardiers and navigators often designed their jackets with squadron patches and decorate artwork painted on the back side. Casually referred to as a bomber jacket, the original designation of this jacket was Jacket, Pilot's (summer), and its usage during the war was not limited to pilots or bomber crews it was used in a large scale.

Though the original design would vary a bit depending on the manufacturer, and even among the contracts within a single manufacturer, all A-2 jackets had many distinguishing characteristics: a snap-flap patch pocket on either side that does not have hand warmer compartments, as hands in pockets were considered unfit in military, a shirt-style snap-down collar, knit cuffs, shoulder straps and waistband, a single piece of leather constructed back, to lessen stress on the garment, and a very lightweight cotton or silk inner lining with a leather hang strap and just below the back collar a military spec tag attached. The original A-2 is not like the modern loose-fitting jackets, it looks to us today more likely as a trim-fitting jacket. It was designed to fit the thinner male. Original A-2 jackets worn by modern men might seem slightly snug in the shoulders.

Features:

This flight jacket made to the same resolute standards as the authentic A-2 military version. Soft lamb touch supple “Nappa” is sewn with a dual entry pockets, plus ribbed cuffs and hem to keep the warmth. With imprinted U.S flag lining, it’s a pure 100% leather jacket that has interior pockets and Snap storm flap over front zipper. The collar and flap-pocket snaps are anodized. The sewing is good and the leather seems to be of good quality too. This leather is not thin for an A-2 Jacket, and actually it is thicker than many other usual A-2’s in the market.

Why should one buy it?

The jacket itself is amazing-looking and has really nice features at an incredible price range of 149.99$ to 179.99$, which is quite cheap. The zipper is YKK metal - not plastic - and thus it’s very smooth. It has got better looking, and it gets more comfortable with age. Zippers, pockets, snaps, etc. all of them are in perfect working order.

Pros:

It is very soft, evenly-dyed glove leather of goatskin. This jacket is perfect for casual to dressy wear in summer, spring, and fall. Woven cuffs and the waistband are of soft kind. Too soft for construction sites unless you're the boss and don't plan on rubbing up against a nail. It has perfect fitting around the waist. For even the coldest morning, only with a flannel shirt underneath, this very lightly insulated jacket has enough warmth. No such loss of colour, just kind of a burnishing. Makes it look more like an old favourite, rather than something fresh out of the box. This is a whole bunch more comfortable than most leather jackets in the higher price range, which are comparatively pretty heavy, and some of them may even cost you $300 or more. So in such low price range it’s really an authentic one!

Cons:

First, the back is three-piece leather rather than one-piece, which is a cause of dislike to several pilots because of the discomfort on long flights in steel seats while wearing a three-piece. Second, there is a size issue; people are saying that it runs small. Third, inexplicably, there is no snap at the top of the wind flap to close it easily. There is one at the bottom, though it is not needed. Fourth, in spite of the stiffer, slicker stuff you usually find on jacket cuffs the waistband and cuffs are made of a very soft knit fabric. There’s an issue of beginning to fuzz and pill. Fifth, the jacket has an attractive khaki coloured shirt-like weave fabric that causes just enough friction that you have to be a bit more deliberate about putting your arms through the sleeve.

Conclusion/Verdict:

If you look at old photos of Pilots in the World War 2 wearing the A-2's, you'll see that they're worn quite tight around the shoulders and chest. However you can look pretty dorky wearing one of these so tight now a days, so I must say that the choice of fitting varies people to people and day to day. If we discuss about the three-piece leather issue, you cannot manage any one-piece leather jacket in such low budget. I’ve used this and the jacket is pretty good enough in the 'width' section, so there is nothing to worry about, unless you are a Clydesdale, if this is the case, then in my opinion it probably makes sense to go a bit up on sizing. Else, you can use the 'general' size chart on the website as a proper guide. Great quality – great product, so wasting no time, as a user I am advising you to go and grab this amazing product before someone else does. Get yours here!
